TIME
10:00 - 19:00
VENUE
The Fashion Gallery
MN109, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The textile work of celebrated Japanese artist Junichi Arai (1932 – 2017) is renowned for its complexity and innovation. Deploying traditional textile-making techniques into experimental production processes, Arai is known for creating pieces that combine contemporary Western technologies with Eastern methodologies. The quality of Arai’s avant-garde craftsmanship has been recognised and led to significant collaborations, with Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garçons) among others. Born in 1932 into a family of kimono-fabric weavers living in the textile manufacturing town of Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture, Arai grew up around fabrics. His knowledge of weaving and yarn stretches centuries of tradition and heritage, reinterpreting these with advanced computer programming into cutting edge treatments, manipulating the properties of fabric into sculptures of unparalleled innovation.

The exhibition, “Self-Organisation: Junichi Arai’s Textile Anthology” is the first retrospective exhibition of the master in Hong Kong, and is dedicated to honouring and presenting Arai’s lifelong efforts and achievements. Dubbed a “dream weaver,” the show will present the diverse challenges and beauty of fabrics created by Arai, offering an immersive experience into the sensorial, textural, and visual inner world of the artist.

Moving beyond style, design concept, or furnitures; the true luxury to space is about the emotion and experience, something that can be felt, react to, and even have an influence to the person within. Such experience and interactions between human, design, and all the tidbits are powerful and impactful; however a multifaceted task to realise. From emotion, human familiar and design practice, Ed Ng, Principal & Co-Founder, AB Concept, will share anecdotes from the front lines with concrete examples that are relevant even beyond the design of spaces.
